The first Chaozhou-dialect film brought out by Hongtu Company and Guangdong Chaozhou Opera Troupe. Sixth Madam Su (Yao Xuanqiu) and cousin Guo Jichun (Chen Lihua) develops a mutual affection after being with each other as study companions. Su’s father, however, has betrothed the maiden to an unscrupulous lawyer (Cai Jinkun). When the lawyer and his wet nurse (Hong Miao) press Su for consent, she throws herself into the river but is fortunately saved by Guo and her maid Peach Blossom (Chen Fugui). With the help of a sympathetic boatman (Chen Shuihe), the lovers eventually flee to take fate in their own hands. Winner of multiple national Chinese opera awards, the original stage play was adapted onto the screen and went on to pioneer a trend of Chaozhou opera films. The fan stunt by Cai Jinkun, the side-splitting female impersonation by Hong Miao, together with the masterful singing and acting by Yao Xuanqiu unravelled to audiences across Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and Singapore the many charms of opera films.
