Inspired by the Shaoxing opera Chasing the Fish , the film tells the story of impoverished scholar Zhang Zhen (Chen Chuhui), who is confined to his study in the residence of his snobbish father-in-law Jin Chong (Yao Jiaxiong) and his fiancée Peony (Zeng Shanfeng). The Carp Fairy (doubled by Zeng Shanfeng), sympathetic with his plight, transforms herself into Peony and calls in on him every night. When the truth is out, Jin asks the incorruptible Judge Bao (Cheung Ying-yin) to tell the real from the fake. Oddly enough, there also emerge two judges with one disguised by the Tortoise Fairy (Zhang Rengui). At last it is Carp’s love and devotion that saves the day. Mermaid Story is one of the unusual colour fantasy films in the repertoire of Bian Sing Studio and Xin Tian Cai Chaozhou Opera Troupe. With master director Lee Sunfung at the helm, special effects and sets were aptly used to accentuate elements of the supernatural. The crack performances by Chen Chuhui and Zeng Shanfeng were well backed by Cheung Ying-yin, in his hard-to-see turn as the zany Judge Bao.
