A love triangle formed by three actresses with the femme fatale played by a man! Cecilia Cheung plays both sexes and dons a female appearance in seducing the emperor only in fact to steal his woman Wu Yen. Anita Mui, as the “male” lead, acts out in fine detail the part of a lewd, filthy, spineless emperor, who ends up disguising himself as a woman to seduce a male general. Sammi Cheng as the title character captures the ultimate in both femininity and masculinity – a perennial winner in wars who however plays a losing game on another battlefield that is love. This post-modern take on an opera tale opens up brand new vistas where the notion of gender affords countless possibilities.
