Twelve Singing Beauties
Dir: Chan Pei

1952 / B&W / D Beta / Cantonese / 88min
The beauties are heard singing literally the entire time, no matter where they are and what they do. This Cantonese musical is a typical example of the genre, with scores of favourite ditties and colloquialisms, marked by strong local flavour, whimsical shenanigans and an active sense of humour. Yam Kim-fai, playing a dashing young woman in modern attire, exudes an air that defies the boundary of gender. Of particular note is the opera excerpt from Dream of the Red Chamber, in which Yam Kim-fai and Pak Suet-sin’s sensitive and intimate portrayal of two star-crossed lovers totally blows their fans away.
