United Film Enterprise debut, Family is based on renowned novel The Torrent Trilogy Volume One written by Ba Jin. Following the progressive spirit of the May Fourth literary movement, the film stages an all-star cast, delivering an educational as well as entertaining performance of literary adaptation. The story focuses on the Ko brothers’ (Ng Cho-fan, Cheung Wood-yau and Cheung Ying) struggling to survive the oppressions and repressions in the feudalistic family, but in vain. The eldest brother is indecisive and succumbed to the old values, while the two younger brothers are forced to break off from the family in order to breathe new air of reforms. Director Ng Wui skillfully condenses the intersecting relationships into a well-established labyrinthine tragedy.
