Director Tso Kea transports the pair of doomed lovers in Emile Bronte’s Wuthering Heights to China’s Early Republic days in this romantic melodrama. As in the Bronte novel, the couple at the centre of the story is responsible for the destruction of their own relationship with their selfishness and indecisiveness towards each other as well as other people. Taking a cue from German Expressionism, Tso visually enhances his characters’ inner emotional struggles with the use of light effects and complex tracking shots. The filmmaker also creates layers in his frames to emphasise the barrier between his characters’ tortured minds and the rest of the world. An official selection of the fourth Asian Film Festival, Love Lingers On is a rare masterpiece that can successfully translate classical literature into pure cinematic language.
