Poor village girl Heung-lan (Law Yim-hing) is sold into the Shing family as a servant to pay off debts. After her husband Chingwan (Law Kim-long) leaves to enlist in the army, the Shings’ matriarch (Fung Wong Nui) - who is in love with her cousin Chingwan - is determined to make Heung-lan’s life miserable in the household. Meanwhile, the Shing family patriarch (Cheng Kwunmin) tries to take Heung-lan as his mistress. Seven years later, Ching-wan escapes from the army to find his wife and child, but is immediately captured. To save her husband, Heung-lan agrees to marry a government official as his mistress, but she actually has other plans in mind. Cheng is at his most deliciously evil as the conniving family patriarch, and the screen lights up when he appears on screen with Fung’s mouthy and rude matriarch.
