At a lonely house on the edge of a prairie, an ex-con has returned to seek revenge on a blind old woman, who has destroyed his family and married his ex-lover to her naive son. The stage is set for an expose of human nature, hatred, and revenge while the howling winds provide music for this lamentation. Ng Cho-fan displays his usual brilliance as the rednecked man of grudge, while Hung Sin Nui plays Ng’s charming yet shrewish ex-lover. But the major chill comes from Wong Man-lei who plays the blind old woman; her straight-sighted unblinking eyes remains one of the most menacing expressions in Cantonese cinema. An absolute tour de force.
