After the surprise success of Songs of the Peach Blossom River (1956), Hsin Hwa spared no expense to produce this grand musical – shot in color – as its follow-up. Courtesan Hong (Chung Ching) and lowly laborer Lang (Jin Feng) reunite after a long separation. However, Lang’s silk warehouse bosses Hu Sanbao (Wu Jiaxiang) and Master Liu (You Guangzhao) are determined to have Hong by any means necessary. To get Lang out of the way, Sanbao even steals money from the silk warehouse and sets Lang up as the scapegoat. All the characters finally clash in the film’s grand finale, set in Sanbao and Hong’s wedding. In line with Hsin Hwa’s style of light musicals as well as traditional Chinese folk tales, Her Spring Breeze is a fun film that is as clever as it is delightful.
