This co-directorial effort by Chan Pei and Dan Duyu is also one of the earliest Chan Pei works that still exists today. This wartime melodrama follows the roller coaster relationship between two lovers who were separated by the war, only to be faced with even more hardships after their long due reunion. Chan uses this tragic story of two star-crossed lovers as a way of criticizing war and tycoons who had put their wealth ahead of others’ well being. Watch out for Chan’s memorable appearance as a patriarch who forces his son to marry for money. His performance alone can serve as proof of Chan’s grasp on dramatic tension.
