Though Chan started his career with many contemporary musicals, he shifted his focus to period musicals after 1955. In his final film set in the contemporary world, Chan tackles the detective genre with this thrilling story of a young girl (Fung Bo-bo) who aspires to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a brilliant detective. When a gang of robbers kidnaps the girl, her father heroically breaks into the robbers’ hideout to save his loving daughter. Be sure to notice Chan Pei’s handling of the action-packed finale, especially in the striking film noiresque lighting and the director’s brilliant use of calculated camera angles to express the relationship between each character.
