In the 1960’s, many Hong Kong films were adapted from radio plays. Based on a Rediffusion Radio play, this period drama follows the plight of a spoiled young woman who is falsely accused of murdering her sister-in-law. Fortunately, her sister’s husband returns in time to join the investigation and prove her innocence. Chan wields expert control over shot composition and editing, creating tense, riveting court scenes that make full use of Chan’s talented cast of popular opera stars. Witness for the Prosecution is also unique for infusing elements from modern detective procedurals into a period film.
