Ng Wui’s The Precious Lotus Lantern (1956) sparked a craze for Cantonese opera films with synchronous recording of drums and gongs played by bands. This film is based on an opera written by famous playwright Lee Siu-wan for the Ho Fei-fan Opera Troupe. The film retains the most moving key scenes of the opera. Ng always shot opera films in the form of stage documentaries. He brought the elegant Sima Sheung-yu played by Ho Fei-fan and the charming Cheuk Man-kwan played by Mui Yee to live on the big screen. This is a great treat for those who love Ho Feifan’s singing. The two famous songs “Courtship” and “Denunciation of the Bashu Officials” sung in an ancient style can be heard in their entirety.
