It's animation of romantic love against loyalty to nation had been a favorite for adaptation for stage, opera and film. Set shortly after the Ming Dynasty was displaced by Qing, it's the sweeping sage of the songstress Li Xianjun and the scholar-turned-rebel Hon Fangyu, played here respectively by Patricia Lam Fung, the top yu nu (young, innocent girl) of the turn of the 1950s, and opera star Lau Kim Long.
