Confucius is an important film. It's a remarkable artifact from the Orphan Island period, an extraordinary production of the Chinese film industry during that time and a work of great significance in the oeuvre of Fei Mu, one of the greatest directors in the history of Chinese cinema. The discovery of this long-lost film fills a significant void in Chinese cinema.

Last April, the Hong Kong Film Archive presented the film in its initial phase of restoration, with about nine minutes of loose fragments shown separately at the end. We had since inserted most of the break-off scenes back into the film, based on scientific evidence of the negatives and research on available literature. This further-restored version represents the latest step in the process of restoring the film to its original glory, a goal that we hope can be accomplished soon.
