A psychedelic kaleidoscope of a thriller! Suzuki's first fully independent film is based on Hyakken Uchida's novel, Disk of Sarasate, taking its title from a gramophone recording of Pablo de Sarasate's violin composition, Zigeunerweisen (German for "Gypsy Airs"). Free from B-movie constraints, Suzuki goes even wilder and more personal, creating intellectual characters in a period setting, his narrative ever more convoluted and abstract. Exhibiters initially refused to screen the film but producer Arato Genjiro was so determined he showed it in a tent. It went on to gain a devoted cult following, not to mention artistic renown.
