This tender drama is based on a short story by American novelist Pete Hamill and inspired by the pop song Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree by Tony Orlando. The story is set in the spacious beauty of Hokkaido (towards which the family in Where Spring Comes Late (1970) travels), where an ex-convict (Takakura Ken, the 1960s ninkyo-eiga icon) is about to meet his wife (Baisho Chieko, better known as Tora-san's sister)... The film was a huge commercial and critical success and was recently remade by Hollywood.
