This road movie is set in 1970, when Japan was going through drastic changes at the onslaught of its fabled economic boom. A young miner is out of work when his mine closes. He decides to take his family from sunny Kyushu to start a new life in wintry Hokkaido up north, where spring comes late. They pass through a myriad cultural landscape that is new Japan, including an exhilarating stop at Expo '70 at Osaka. Yamada's mastery of film art is evident in this touching drama, as he projects the epic from the personal with splendid Shochiku Grandscope photography and a lyrical rhythm. The film also features Ozu's favorite Ryu Chishu.
