Mt. Hayachine is the highest peak in the Kitagami range in northern Japan and is worshipped since ancient times. This leisurely paced film chronicles a year in the life of the people in the valley at the foot of the mystical mountain as they prepare to perform the kagura, the music and dances that originated from religious rituals dating back to medieval times. Haneda captures the land and the people through the four seasons, at the critical historical juncture when a long-lasting lifestyle gradually gives way to modernity.
