This is based on a non-fiction novel by Saki Ryuzo, which is in turn based on the true-crime exploits of a serial killer's 78-day murderous spree in 1963. Imamura tells the story in an intricate, flash back and forward structure, chronicling the killer's life from his middle-class Catholic upbringing to committing petty crimes to, finally, serial killing. The killer is portrayed matter-of-factly, never appealing for sympathy or contempt, brought to life by Ogata Ken's gripping performance.
