One of the most accomplished of Kurosawa's early films. A mid-level bureaucrat learns that he is dying of cancer. Confronted with imminent death, he tries to find meaning for his existence and his life. A profoundly touching and remarkably provocative work, the film won the Special Prize from the Senate of the 1954 Berlin International Film Festival.
