“Why give us black after giving us blue?” The sorrow of Lin Dai's character in The Blue and the Black takes on extra oignancy
considering that it is one of her last roles, remaining unfinished because of the star's untimely death before the film was completed. The blue stands for hope in the film, but it is the darkness represented by the black that has come to dominate our experience of it.
