Return of the Restored : Confucius
Confucius is an important film. It's a
remarkable artifact from the Orphan Island
period, an extraordinary production of the
Chinese film industry during that time and
a work of great significance in the oeuvre
of Fei Mu, one of the best directors in the
history of Chinese film. The discovery and
subsequent restoration of the long-lost
Confucius filled an important void in Chinese
cinema and will surely contribute to the
better understanding and appreciation of it in
the future.
The Hong Kong Film Archive is very proud
of the response to our debut presentation
of Confucius last April. All of the scheduled
screenings were quickly sold out and so
were the three extra screenings we added
in response. It took us by total surprise.
Confucius is a film that demands study, not
just from the perspectives of film history
and aesthetics but also those of Chinese
history, Chinese culture, art history,
musicology and other disciplines.
We are therefore presenting the film again,
once every month in August, September
and October of 2009, together with two
seminars to foster more dialogues on this
notable part of our heritage.
