Introduction
Rising Stars of the Pear Garden

The sixth Cantonese Opera Day will take place on 30 November under the theme “The Rising Stars of Cantonese Opera”. The aim of the event is to promote Cantonese operatic art to the young people. During the last two weeks of November, HKFA will be screening a series of films in resonance with the theme, including celebrated Cantonese opera films Ten Years Dream and Princess Chang Ping, starring then rising Pear Garden stars such as Lam Kar-sing and players from the Chor Fung Ming Opera Troupe; teen opera films of the 60s such as Eternal Love; stories about the artistic struggles of young opera artists such as The Dutiful Daughter Chu-chu and The Sorrowful Lute; and A Dying Phoenix which documents the experimental performances of a contemporary opera troupe. At a talk on 29 November, opera virtuoso Yuen Siu-fai and other artists will discuss the mentoring and grooming of Cantonese operatic talent. The common aim of these activities is to raise the interest of the young in Cantonese opera, enhance their understanding and appreciation of the art, and ultimately, attract them to join the field in the spirit of preserving and celebrating our cultural heritage.
