In Commemoration of the 60th Death Anniversary of.
Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948)
“Around the world, when aspiring filmmakers learn their craft, they study Eisenstein.” David Bordwell said so .
Eisenstein had made less than ten films in his life, including some unfinished works and also those completed by others, but they have all exemplified the technique of montage. Many Soviet directors of that era had experimented and edified it, but only Eisenstein had enhanced it into a creative aesthetics. In his hands, montage is more than mere editing but film and life itself. Montage is in a world of its own.
Eisenstein had his origin in the theatre, moved on to film, and retired to teaching, and had ever dedicated his life in developing theories. His creative life was tied with Soviet Union’s political upheavals; his works have documented Russian revolutionary idealism and the power of the masses. Behind the soaring political ideology, lies a nationalistic spirit.
