Chinese Film Panorama 2008: Commemorating the 30th anniversary of China's Reform and Opening-up

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of China’s Reform and Opening-up, the ten films chosen for this year’s Chinese Film Panorama reflect China’s advancement from many socio-economic and civilian aspects, giving the local audience a better understanding of the fruits of progress.

For the last three decades, China’s cinema has commercialised, modernised and internationalised, raising the par in the levels of artistic and worldwide influence. The two opening films: Sudden Incidence focuses on the conflicts between a veteran county official and his freshman subordinate, and how they join effort in tackling sudden crises; Way of the Snowstorm is set against a blizzard when police and civilians try to maintain order as well as performing rescues. The engineers and scientists in The Dream is Alive battle the forces of nature in building a modern harbour.

Made in the early years of reform, the acclaimed In the Wild Mountains is a portrait of reform through the eyes of small-time villagers. The panoramic Heavenly Grassland tells the hopes and dreams of Inner Mongolian nomads; while the changes in Tibetan history and culture for the last five decades is told through a woman’s love and hatred in Song of Tibet.

Competitive Chinese-US trade has set the stage for Final Dash. On the other side, a Japanese man and a Chinese female taxi driver have spent The Longest Night in Shanghai together in this dazzling metropolis. Good Man is a humourous tale claiming that traditional values of self-sacrifice can still be found in a modernised society where egocentricity prevails. The documentary Dream Weavers ─ Beijing 2008 takes us behind the scene of planning of the Beijing Olympics, a testimony to the 30 years of reform.
