“Composition ad libitum” Music Composition Animateur Scheme
(In cooperation with Hong Kong Composers’ Guild)

Introduction

“Composition ad libitum” Music Composition Animateur Scheme is an innovative arts education project. Distinguished Hong Kong composers will visit schools and work with students participating in a project covering music appreciation and music creativity, and through which, the students would be able to foster self-confidence in expression, communication, performance and creativity.

The project focuses on providing basic composition training while introducing interesting music of contemporary and classical composers. It aims to cultivate students' abilities to appreciate and discover music and sounds that they may or may not encounter in their everyday life, and to encourage them to create new acoustic sounds and compose new music with standard musical instruments. In other words, it is not a composition course on pop-song writing, but one that encourages students to experience and invent new ideas freely. Activities will include music appreciation, sounds/music composition, composer-performer workshop, rehearsals and in-school concert. Upon completion of the project, students will take part in the finale concert and share with their audience what they have learned throughout the year.

At the end of the project, the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild will select and present an award to the most distinguished student among the trainees. During the next 12 months, guild members will provide the winning student with guidance on composing musical pieces.

The project will be implemented in 2 primary schools and 2 secondary schools.

Theme
Students are encouraged to discover their hidden talent by focusing firstly on the subject of creative sound design rather than complicated topic like harmony and counterpoint. With the project theme, “Composition ad libitum”, students will explore various kinds of creative sounds on voices, instruments, percussion and everyday objects, and will arrange these sounds in an organized manner in musical contexts. This will naturally lead to the studies of rhythm, notation and form. The next musical element to manage will be pitch organization which deals with melodic writing, voice leading, etc. Instead of continuing the studies with standard song writing in classical or popular styles, students will then be encouraged to compose more creative types of music with, for example, irregular phrasing, surprising melodies, dissonance chords, arrhythmic patterns, extended instrumental techniques, etc.

Content and Implementation
The project will run for 11 months, from September 2010 to July 2011 and will be implemented in 5 phases:

Phase 1: Lecture Demonstration
September 2010
Hong Kong Composers’ Guild will organize a lecture demonstration (approximately 1.5 hours) for each selected school, for as many students, teachers and parents as possible, to explain what the project is like and the enjoyment of composing music.

Phase 2: Music Appreciation and Creative Workshop
September 2010 to May 2011
The 25-session workshop will be conducted in 3 parts:

Part 1: Music Appreciation Workshop (5 sessions)
September to November 2010
Students will be introduced to audio-visual recordings of chamber, orchestral, vocal, electronic, and theatre music of various styles. They are also given an opportunity to attend a live concert of contemporary music Musicarama 2010 at professional performing venue for free.

Part 2: Sounds and Music Composition Workshop (10 sessions)
November 2010 to March 2011
Students will be taught the standard composition techniques and the content includes sound design, rhythm, extended instrumental techniques, melodic writing, simple harmonization, notation, phrasing, form, texture, etc.

Part 3: Composer/Performer Exchange workshop (5 sessions)
April to May 2011
Several professional performers will come to the school, to give demonstration performances of excerpts of students’ pieces, and provide professional advice.

Phase 3: Music composition guidance workshop (5 sessions) and in-school concert
June to July 2011
Under the guidance and leadership of workshop instructors, students will try to identify their preferred creative approaches within two months, and subsequently produce a finished work. Afterwards, professional performers will come to the school, to practice and perform students’ works, to ensure the best preparations are made for the in-school finale.

Phase 4: Finale Concert
The scheme aims to cultivate students' abilities to appreciate and discover music and sounds and to encourage them to create new acoustic sounds and music through a series of workshops.  Participants from 2 primary and 2 secondary schools will share the results of their training with members of the public in the finale performance.
