Scheme Introduction
“The Mermaid and Treasure Island” English Musical Theatre Animateur Scheme is a comprehensive musical theatre education project for primary and secondary schools. It aims to engage the teachers, students and the whole school in the unique art form of musical theatre, and produce high standard complete musicals, which reflect an informed understanding, talent, training processes, and collaboration among schools and professionals. "The Little Mermaid" and "Sindbad Sails Again" are the musical plays performed by primary and secondary school respectively.
Through an array of school-based, studio and performance venue programmes – in-school introductory performance, musical theatre workshops, audition, little Broadway concert/competition, deliver musical to the community and finale performance – the scheme emphasizes the following:
Enthusiasm towards musical theatre – starting with two age-appropriate musicals, the participants will grasp the basic style and practice of musical theatre. They will be encouraged to read and attend musicals apart from regular trainings and performance opportunities throughout the year.
Thorough musical theatre performance training – professional teaching artists will train students with 3 levels of training workshops: Musical Theatre Introductory Workshop; Musical Theatre Training; and Intensive Musical Theatre Training. Students will be challenged by the vigorous demands of singing, dancing and acting as musical theatre performers.
Cooperation and sharing – many aspects of learning and staging the musicals are based on cooperation and sharing. The participants will learn to cooperate with other cast members during the rehearsal process and share their experiences with their families, students from other participating schools as well as the community.
Exploration and analysis of related theme and issues – in the process of play and character analysis, students will explore the rich elements embedded in the selected musicals. The instructors will guide the students through the theme and issues, such as coming of age, eternity, love and sacrifice, imagination and adventures.
The Scheme will be implemented in 2 primary and 2 secondary schools.
Programme Theme
Two English musicals namely “The Little Mermaid” and “Sindbad Sails Again” are chosen for primary & secondary schools respectively.
“The Little Mermaid”
Adapted from the famous fairy tale of Hans Christian Anderson, Princess Miranda, mermaid daughter of the Sea King, has come of age and is preparing to make her first “Ascension” to the surface. In her first glimpse of the world above, her heart is captured by Prince William, whom Miranda rescues in a ship wreck. She asks the Sea Witch for legs and drinks a potion that will give her legs…but take away her voice for a year, unless she is kissed by a prince, in which case her voice will return and her leg will remain forever.
With excellent music, lyrics and script very suitable to primary children, “The Little Mermaid” enables the children to enjoy the processes of training and rehearsal with enthusiasm.
“Sindbad Sails Again”
The story begins as Morgana, the gypsy, gathers a group of pirates around her crystal ball. She has important news to flash! On the other side, it is turn of the century and young Harold Sindbad, the seventh son of the seventh son of the legendary Sindbad, finds the lost map and heads for glory. Sailing the seven seas, he meets pirates, mer-people, sultans, Roc Birds and ends up on the Fabulous Treasure Island, where dreams come true and everyone gets what they wants…
The high quality script, associated music and variety of dances will enable students of different characters – shy, inarticulate, ordinary, to blossom in this fantasy musical play where ensemble work is emphasized to bring out the fun and entertainment to the audience.
