Scheme Introduction
"Creative Sounds and Creative Music" Music Composition Animateur Pilot Scheme is a new arts education programme that sends distinguished Hong Kong composers to schools to work with students participating in a course covering music appreciation and music creativity, and through which the students would be able to foster self-confidence in expression, communication, performance and creativity.
The programme focuses on providing basic composition training while introducing interesting music of contemporary and classical composers. It aims to cultivate students' abilities to appreciate and discover music and sounds that they may or may not encounter in their everyday life, and to encourage them to create new acoustic sounds and compose new music with standard musical instruments. In other words, it is not a composition course on pop-song writing, but one that encourages students to experience and invent new ideas freely. Activities will include 2 types of training workshops (in music appreciation and sounds/music composition), intensive sounds and music composition, rehearsals and auditioning and in-school concert. On completion of the course, students will take part in the finale concert and share with their audience what they have learned throughout the year.
The Scheme is implemented in 2 primary schools and 2 secondary schools.
Programme Content
Schools participating in the programme will be grouped under 2 categories: primary and secondary schools.
Programme Theme
Students are encouraged to discover their hidden talent by focusing firstly on the subject of creative sound design rather than complicated topics like harmony and counterpoint. With the programme theme, "Creative Sounds and Creative Music", students will explore various kinds of creative sounds on voices, instruments, percussion and everyday objects, and will arrange these sounds in an organized manner in musical contexts. This will naturally lead to the studies of rhythm, notation and form. The next musical element to manage will be pitch organization which deals with melodic writing, voice leading, etc.. Instead of continuing the studies with standard song writing in classical or popular styles, students will then be encouraged to compose more creative types of music with, for example, irregular phrasing, surprising melodies, dissonant chords, arrhythmic patterns, extended instrumental techniques, etc..
September to October, 2008
Phase 1: Music Appreciation Workshop
The Music Appreciation Workshop will include 5 sessions. Students will be introduced to audio-visual recordings of chamber, orchestral, vocal, electronic, and theatre music of various styles. They are also given an opportunity to attend a live concert of contemporary music "Musicarama 2008" at Hong Kong City Hall on 24 October 2008.

Phase 2: Composition Training Workshop

June to July, 2009
Phase 4: Rehearsals and In-school Concert
There will be 5-session rehearsals and 1 in-school concert. Students are provided with the chance to try out their pieces. A few professional musicians will demonstrate and take part in the rehearsals of the student compositions together with the students themselves who shall also act as the performers. Students will be ready for a school concert in the final session. Through a formal audition exercise, a panel of adjudicators will study all the final compositions and select the best pieces among the four participating schools for the finale concert.
