General Introduction

Having successfully launched the LCSD's Artist-in-Residence Scheme "Interactive Composition Workshops" in 2005/2006, the Hong Kong Composers' Guild would like to continue its efforts in promoting musical creativity and artist-audience relationship by organizing a new series of 38 tailor-made events held over seven months, with the aim to help develope the image of Tsuen Wan Town Hall as "The Centre for Composition and Contemporary Music". The carefully designed activities include a series of lectures, demonstrations, workshops, concerts, sound installations and an exhibition, held in different venues of Tsuen Wan Town Hall, making full use of its facilities to enable an intimate sharing of experiences between front-line musicians, composers, audiences and participants. Through this programme, we hope to cultivate a higher level of musical appreciation in the community, and a greater awareness of the creative potential we all possess. In addition, we would like to provide further opportunities for school music teachers to prepare for the new curriculum changes, in which composition and modern music become some of the indispensable parts. We hope that the project will offer an enjoyable way to equip the participants and to build up their self-confidence in artistic expression.

The target audience and participants of this project are most likely students (secondary and tertiary), school music teachers, and those having some basic knowledge of staff or cipher notation. But people who cannot read music would also enjoy and benefit a lot from the activities. Although each activity has a separate topic, each activity is inter-connected. It would be best if participants can join the activities as a series, but those deciding to join individual activities can also benefit from them.

Concert 1 (Lecture-Demonstration Concert on Hong Kong Composers' Works)
Date: 10 November 2006 (Fri)
Time: 8pm
Venue: Cultural Activities Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall
Ticket: HK$50

This educational lecture-demonstration concert will present chamber works by various Hong Kong composers. Each performance of the chamber pieces will be preceded by a demonstration in which the composer and musicians will introduce interesting aspects of the composition process and interpretation. Questions and suggestions by the audience are welcome to encourage meaningful interaction between the three parties: composer, performer and listener.

Concert 2 (Piano Recital on Chinese Composers' Music by Nancy Loo)
Date: 26 January 2007 (Fri)
Time: 8pm
Venue: Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall
Ticket: HK$50

The concert will feature piano solo works by Chinese composers. Performed by renowned Hong Kong pianist Nancy Loo, the concert will include Nancy's favourite piano pieces by Doming Lam and Chan Pui-fan, in addition to other innovative works by contemporary Chinese composers.

Concert 3 (Concert by Singapore Huqin Quartet & LASO Plucked)
Date: 27 January 2007 (Sat)
Time: 8pm
Venue: Cultural Activities Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall
Ticket: HK$50

The Huqin Quartet (consisting of gaohu, erhu, zhonghu and gehu) from Singapore is the first ensemble of its kind professionally set up in the world. With their outstanding performance standard, they have enjoyed great success in Singapore and overseas concert tours in USA, New Zealand and Japan. Back home in Hong Kong, the local plucked-string quartet LASO Plucked (liuqin, yangqin, zhongruan and lairuan) will provide the best contrast to the Huqin Quartet. The concert programme will consist of newly written pieces for these two quartets, respectively, with one commissioned work written for the combined ensemble (octet). Other local western instrumentalists will also join the concert to provide instrumentation variety.

Concert 4 (Concert on Modern Wind/Brass Music by Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia)
Date:

2 March 2007 (Fri)

Time: 8pm
Venue: Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall
Ticket: HK$50

The first musical instruments most Hong Kong children learn nowadays are piano and violin. This culture seems to be established on basis of stereotype convention rather than artistic creativity necessarily. We believe wind and brass music, especially those written in contemporary styles, possesses some excellent qualities worth promoting. This concert will be a showcase of exclusive modern music written by both international and local composers for wind instruments.

Concert 5 (Showcase of Training-Class Participants' Compositions)
Date: 16 March 2007 (Fri)
Time: 8pm
Venue: Cultural Activities Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall
Ticket: HK$50

Out of the 30 participants who have taken part in the eight training classes, the best six pieces of their final projects will be selected for performance in this concert. In order to provide the audience with a greater listening variety, pieces written for different instrumental forces will be selected. One to two additional works by renowned composers will also be included in the programme.

Sound Installation I & II (Free Admission)
Date: August 2006 to October 2006
and November 2006 to January 2007
Venue: Foyer, Tsuen Wan Town Hall

Sound sculpture (also known as "sound art" and "sound installation") is a multimedia art form in which sculpture produces sound or, less often, the reverse. Sound sculptures take the form of indoor sound installations or outdoor installations, or be more or less near conventional musical instruments. Two local composers Dr. Christopher Keyes and Dr. John Chen will design two sets of installations for this project. These small-to-medium size installations, which require creative utilization of materials of all kinds or equipment like computers or instruments, aim to generate interesting sound effects, with and without interactive actions of the visitors/viewers. The composers will also be invited to give a number of on-site demonstrations of the installations.
Exhibition on Hong Kong Composers' Music (Free Admission)
Date: 30 January 2007 – 9 February 2007 (Pre-view) and
11 February 2007 – 16 February 2007 and
21 February 2007 – 2 March 2007 (Exhibition)
Time : 9am - 8pm
Venue: Corridor outside Exhibition Gallery,
Tsuen Wan Town Hall (Pre-view) and
Exhibition Gallery, Tsuen Wan Town Hall

The exhibition will include information on more than 70 composers in Hong Kong, with display of their biographical materials, music scores, electronic works, CD's, DVD's, manuscripts, photos, publicity materials and music analyses. Listening booths are also available for audiences to enjoy the audio (and visual) effects of the music while reviewing the musical scores. In addition, the exhibition will include interactive computer music games designed especially for this project.
