Memorandum: 10 Years. Han. Xiao

Literary music theatre based on seven short stories by Hon Lai-chu, Dorothy Tse Hiu-hung and Lee Wai-yi

This is another innovative production following its P.E. Period 2.0. Theatre Ronin has selected seven short stories amongst the works of three fiction writers - Hon Lai-chu, Dorothy Tse Hiu-hung and Lee Wai-yi – to create a ten-year cityscape.  Wielding its metaphorical tool with theatre as a ‘sword’, Theatre Ronin transforms written texts into literary music theatre, bringing an evening of changing emotions for a new theatre experience.

Holidays

The magic of oblivion does not seem to work on Auntie Yoyo who is getting married soon. Her skin is becoming transparent like cicada wings, which implies that the “holidays” will soon be over…

Merry Christmas

What looks like a dead body is lying on a street in the midnight. Amidst the din of cars honking, people passing by and singing, one voice can be heard saying “Merry Christmas!”.

The Biting Crowd

The city which has disappeared from the map was once the paradise of dream seekers.

Emerging as someone definitely not coming from among the audience, Naomi gets into the house of Mr White and takes over. The silhouette of her body flickers as light and shadow in screening room and disappears. A wanderer has come and gone, but left an indelible mark.

A Chair

A pair of lovers is on a never-ending summer vacation.  The man, inspired by the woman, has found the meaning of existence – to become a chair.

Perhaps, the story begins only at the moment when the name is totally forgotten.

The Puppet

With Kiki standing on another parallel line, I will never be able to meet him again. Yet the piece of oval-shaped wood in the Puppet Shop reminds me of familiar expression.

In the end, I held it in my arms.

Granny Red Flower

Memories carry sounds, tastes and colours.

Etched in Chan Tai-man’s memory about the year he took his School Certificate Examination are the thump-thumping of the stairs, the smell of stinky fermented bean curd and a bright red flower pinned on a bun of grey hair.

A Journey

After leaving home, I got on a double-decker bus, ran into some gangsters, watched the crying show, discovered the house of butterflies… all these made me excited for no obvious reasons.  Only when I was all alone did I realize that it was a journey without end.

About the Group

Theatre Ronin – Theatre as Sword

Founded in 2006 by Tam Hung-man who is also currently its Artistic Director, Theatre Ronin is a one-year grantee of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

The company is dedicated to creating theatre productions imbued with local cultural characteristics and inspired by Hong Kong literature.  Its repertory includes The Mariana Trench (with 3rd run in Beijing in 2013, premiere and a re-run in Hong Kong), Legend of the Ocean: La La & the Litter Castle, P.E. Period 2.0, My P.E. Period, Landscape in the Mist (premiered in Hong Kong and a re-run in Beijing in 2012), Searching for Da Vinci, Wilderness of Soul and To Be Continued.

Always sharpening its theatrical “sword”, Theatre Ronin roams freely on stage with its wildly romantic imagination, presenting scenes of humanity and freezing them in time so as to preserve whatever beauty that remains in this world at a time when ‘aura’ is fading fast.
