If Twelve Angry Men touched, Checkmate promises to rock!
Checkmate - A 15th anniversary production of Theatre Space
A go legend that vanished with the Sino-Japanese War
Legend has it that during World War II, there was a go chess room inside the Japanese army headquarters where twenty-two secret top go masters aided the imperial army's full invasion of China by working strategies from go moves and using the checkerboard as a simulated battlefield.
Young go master Minoru Kitani is invited to become the twenty-third master. In the go chess room, he meets the top national go grandmaster Shūsai Honinbou, the warmongering and blood-thirsty commander Iwane Matsuzaka, the loyal Kouhei Inoue, the ambitious Heiichiro Segoe, the anti-war Chiyoko Shimazu, and the good and gentle servant Natsu.
Inspired by the final phase of a go game, Kitani gradually sees the true cruelty of war. Furthermore, whilst playing a game against Shūsai Honinbou, he is struck by the Chinese go chess genius Go Seigen's profound and all-encompassing "Go position". Against the militarist backdrop, the idealist Kitani is impacted as never before. He reflects anew the relationship between the way of go and the way of the universe.
