"Nothing could diminish the incendiary achievement of this subtle, deep-wrought and immensely funny play about the value and meaning of education...In short, a superb, life-enhancing play." - The Guardian

"Brilliantly funny...The History Boys is moving, disquieting: one follows it with a heart brimful...(Bennett's) finest work in decades." - Financial Times

"A play that strikes me as one of the finest Bennett has ever written, packed with superb one-liners that are surely destined to enter the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations… But this is a play of depth as well as dazzle, intensely moving as well as thought-provoking and funny." - Daily Telegraph

The story takes place in a boys’ school in England. Eight boys have obtained the highest scores ever for the A-level examination and aspire to enter either Oxford or Cambridge. To ensure that they would be safely on the road to Oxbridge, the Headmaster hires a young male teacher to train them specifically in examination techniques.

But since the timetable of the eight boys is already full, the Headmaster decides to cut their lessons with other teachers. An old teacher teaches language studies with poetry and prose of all ages, and conducts his classes like singing and drama productions. Although the students say this is just wasting their time, they like this teacher, and without knowing it, they have actually acquired a good knowledge in literature. There is also the female teacher who helps them build a good foundation in their studies.
The new teacher’s classes instead focus on the examinations for admission to the universities but his teaching methods are criticized by the old teacher and are said to turn history lessons into journalistic writing training.

Later, the old teacher is discovered to have sexually harassed the boys and is forced by the Headmaster to take early retirement. One of the boys blatantly makes a pass at the new teacher... With just a few tricks up their sleeves, the boys make the Headmaster rescind his decision to force the old teacher to retire... Then on the last day of the school term, a traffic accident takes the life of the old teacher and causes the new teacher to be paralysed from the waist down...
