About the Performer

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

Founded in 1985, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain (UOGB), which the Independent describes its performance as simply “the best musical entertainment in the country”, is a group of eight "all-singing, all strumming" ukulele players. The individual performers have varied backgrounds but a complementary expertise, featuring strong individual voices and instrumental abilities. The orchestra has been active for 29 years. It performs in a wide variety of genres ranging from classical music, symphony to pop, rock and roll, jazz and country ditty, which holds that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation as long as they are played on the ukulele.

The orchestra is celebrated for its rapport with audiences, and eliciting a joyous feel-good reaction. The orchestra inexplicably draws the audience in to a rhythmic, joyous, thought-provoking journey through songs that we have heard, songs we have forgotten, songs we have never heard, and songs we perhaps wish we have not encountered, all transformed into a lively, headlong stream of transcendent sounds.

The orchestra, whether at the Glastonbury Festival or Carnegie Hall, sitting in chamber group format and dressed in formal evening wear, uses the limitations of the instrument to create a musical freedom as it reveals unsuspected musical insights.

Beginning in 2012 a wide ranging Ukulele Orchestra tour is underway. This includes the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Norway, America, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and more.
