Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra

Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra is a highly organized orchestra aiming at promoting music among the general public especially the young generation in Hong Kong. In order to achieve its goal, the Orchestra has performed frequently in the Hong Kong City Hall, regional town halls and civic centres a few hundred times for more than 30 years.  A number of internationally famous conductors and soloists have been invited to perform with it.  By using the idioms of popular music and organizing concert talks, the Orchestra has successfully introduced serious music and Chinese orchestral music to the public, and at the same time, brought about an awareness of the indigenous culture of the people.



Dr. Yip Wai-hong

Music Director

Dr. Yip Wai-hong is an eminent music educator. He served Hong Kong Baptist University as the Head of Music and Fine Arts Department for almost 30 years.  He founded the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Children’s Choir, Yip’s Children’s Choir and Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra with the aim to nourish young talents in Hong Kong.

The honours and accolades bestowed upon Dr. Yip include Honorary Citizenships of Fort Worth, Dallas and Tucson; The Golden Key of Avon Lake, Florida; Colonel of the State of Kentucky, the United States; and Hong Kong Art Education of the Year in 1990.  In 2003, he was awarded the Medal of Honour of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  In 2006, he was conferred the Award of Honorary University Fellow of Hong Kong Baptist University.  Dr. Yip was made the Fellows of Wells Cathedral School, the United Kingdom in 2008.  Recently he was awarded “2013 Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award”.

In 2011, Dr. Yip was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) for his valuable contribution to children music education, as well as his dedication in promoting the development of choral and orchestral music.



Jimmy Chiang

Principal Guest Conductor

“Versatility comes through Hard Work, Discipline and Respect”, a title which described Jimmy Chiang in a front-page article written by the international opera magazine Orpheus in 2009.  The Hong Kong born conductor and pianist received the Fellows Diploma from the Trinity College of Music in London at the age of 16.  He then graduated with the Bachelor of Music Degree at Baylor University in the United States, and with “Magister Artium” at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.  His major breakthrough as a conductor came with the winning of the renowned “Lovro von Matacic” International Competition for Young Conductors in Zagreb, Croatia in 2007.  Chiang was also recipient of awards and honours of numerous international competitions such as the Golden Key International Honour Society Performing Arts Showcase in the United States in 2000 and the International Competition for Young Choir Directors in Vienna (2004).

While serving as Principal Conductor of the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra since 2008, Chiang has worked as Assistant Music Director of the Wagner’s Ring Cycle at Theater Lübeck, as well as Kapellmeister at Theater Freiburg.  Since autumn 2013, he took on the position as Kapellmeister of the world famous Vienna Boys’ Choir, with whom he leads the choir in regular concerts, masses at the Imperial Chapel in Vienna and concert tours worldwide.



Anna Baxter


A native of Oklahoma, United States, soprano Anna Baxter has studied at the University of Tulsa, Southern Methodist University and Baylor University, where she earned her Master’s Degree of Music in vocal performance.  Further studies continued privately with internationally acclaimed artists Olivera Miljakovic and Wicus Slabbert in Vienna, where she has found her new home.  Baxter was a prize winner at the 2007 International Singing Competition of Passau, as well as winning numerous other competitions during her studies in the United States.  

Baxter has sung with orchestras such as the Zagreb Philharmonic, Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hansestadt Lübeck, the Sherman Symphony, and Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra.  Great musicians with whom she has shared the stage include Claudio Abbado, Rudolf Buchbinder, Peter Schmidl and Jimmy Chiang.  Since the 2008/09 season Baxter has appeared regularly as a guest soloist at Theater Lübeck and Theater Freiburg in Germany as well as Stadttheater Bern in Switzerland.  Her repertoire includes such roles as Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Freia in Das Rheingold, Liù in Turandot, Marie in The Bartered Bride and the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro.

Programme Length

Running time of each performance is about 2 hours with an intermission of 15 minutes.
