Chaozhou music is renowned for its modes and scales, metres and variation procedures. The appreciation of Chaozhou music would be beneficial to the understanding of Chinese traditional music in terms of its theory, practice and aesthetics.

On the Modes, Metres & Variations in Chaozhou Music

This lecture is an introduction to Chaozhou music and it covers the fundamental theory and practice of modes, scales, metres and variation procedures in Chozhou music. Demonstration of mnemonic singing of two-four and gongche notation is included during the talk so as to illustrate the style and nuances of Chaozhou music.

A Guide to Appreciating Xianshi, Xiyue, Zheng & Gongs and Drums Da luogu in Chaozhou Music

This lecture goes into analyses of some major Chaozhou music genres such as Xianshi ensemble music, zither zheng music, xiyue (fine music), Chaozhou gongs and drums music Da Luogu. The showcasing offers a comprehensive introduction to the repertory and style of the genres.
 

About the Speaker

  

Dr. Ng Chun-hoi studied composition at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong. He also undertook research in Chinese music and teacher education and obtained his doctoral degree from the University of New South Wales, Australia. He has published a CD Rom, ‘Learning Chaozhou Xianshi Music’ and a book (co-authorship), Huang Zi Choral Literature Collection as well as articles on music education appeared in various academic journals and books. Ng has taught music courses at various institutions such as the Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong Baptist University and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He is presently the Dean of the Hong Kong Music Institute where he also teaches composition, music theory and Chinese music history.
