Chaozhou Xianshi Ensemble Music spreads throughout Chaozhou and Shantou town districts and countryside. Its musical form is flexible and can be either big or small. Generally, it is in a small group of musicians. The major instruments include string and plucked-string instruments while guban conducting the tempo and erxian taking the lead.

About the Performers

 

Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble

The Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble is a non-professional organization performing Chaozhou music and Chinese opera in Hong Kong. Formed in the 1970’s, the Ensemble was a regular performing group in the outdoor entertainment programmes of the former Hong Kong Urban Council. Its members are local enthusiasts in Chaozhou music, most of whom with 20 to 30 years of performing experience. These veterans are now helping to groom younger musicians either as coaches or music teachers. Apart from performing as accompanying ensemble for Chaozhou opera troupes in Hong Kong, it has also toured Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. The musicians are in close contact with famous virtuosi in Chaozhou and Shantou, practising with them and actively promoting cultural exchange in a bid to keep the art form thriving.

The box office of Yau Ma Tei Theatre only sells tickets for programmes performed at the venue. 

 

Programme Length

Running time of the performance is about 2 hours with an intermission of 15 minutes.

Audience are strongly advised to arrive punctually. No latecomers will be admitted until a suitable break or the interval in the programme.
