About the lectures

The opera is generally regarded as the most august and sublime genre in Western music.  It is an art form which impresses the listener with music of magnificent beauty, a grandeur that is beyond words.  The opera is also a complex, multi-disciplinary art form integrating elements of music, literature and poetry (libretto), theatre (dramaturgy and acting), visual arts (stage design, lighting and costume design) and dance.  With so many factors involved, the degree of difficulty of mounting an opera is high, but the interest it engenders in the audience is proportionately great.  The only question is: how do we go about appreciating it?

This is a series of nine talks and a sequel to the speaker's highly popular Five Signature Operas by Verdi Series in mid-2013. As before, the speaker would offer his secret “6S” key to the appreciation of opera for beginners, devised on the basis of his many years of opera appreciation experience. Nine opera classics on the various aspects of love will be discussed, featuring the works of Puccini of Italy, Gounod and Bizet of France, Mozart of Austria, Wagner of Germany. From there we proceed on to the appreciation of the great art of the opera in depth. Each talk will feature video screenings from the opera(s) in discussion to enhance interest and appeal.
