Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra

Founded in 1962, the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra is a music organization under the Hong Kong YWCA and is one of the Chinese orchestras with the longest history in Hong Kong. The Orchestra has organized performances regularly to introduce Chinese folk music of different styles to the public and to provide training and performing opportunities to local young musicians.

Beginning from 1996, the Orchestra’s concerts are mainly organized by the Hong Kong government, and were well received by the general public and the music profession. Apart from organizing concerts, the Orchestra participates actively in social services and performs for voluntary groups, including schools, social centres and elderly centres.

In recent years, the Orchestra has collaborated with an array of music virtuosi including Xia Feiyun, Jing Jianshu, Wang Fujian, Qu Chunquan (conductors), Li Zhen, Ma Di (dizi), Qi Baoligao (matouqin), Yang Wei (pipa), Jiang Kemei (banhu/jinghu), Zhang Gaoxiang (yangqin), Guo Yazhi (suona/guanzi), He Tao (erhu), Yang Xue (gaohu/erhu) and Luo Jing (zheng) as well as local music elites like Wai Sing-fat, Pang Yui-sing, Ho Man-chuen, Chan Ning-chi, Alfred Wong (conductors), Lo Wai-leung (suona/guanzi), Purple Lee, Jonathan Wong, David Lui (singers), Chau Chin-tung, Made in Hong Kong @ Four Gig Heads (percussion), The Bear Children’s Choir (choir), Loo Sze-wang (sheng) and Wong Lok-ting (erhu/gaohu). In 2007, the Orchestra toured to Melbourne, Australia to perform a joint concert with Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra. In 2012, the Orchestra was invited to perform at the Cultural Show of the 63rd Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China.  All the performances have received great acclaim from the audiences and the critics alike.

Hong Kong Puppet and Shadow Art Center

Established in 2001, the Hong Kong Puppet and Shadow Art Center has been able to carve a unique style in the performing arts by assimilating the traditional and the innovative. Particular emphasis is on the manipulation techniques, as a result of which the group’s puppets and shadow puppets come vividly alive under the puppeteers’ hands.  It is especially acclaimed for its mastery of all four types of traditional puppetry techniques. The group won a Special Award at the All China Golden Lion Award Competition for Puppetry and Shadow Play in 2003.  It has been an active performing group in various Leisure and Cultural Services Department venues, including as an Artist-in-Residence at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre and the Tai Po Civic Centre, and was a Community Cultural Ambassador. It also taught in the Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s Xiqu Education Project, and gave outreach puppet shows in schools, malls, hotels and entertainment venues.  The group strives to stage performances that are both creative and professional. Some of its notable repertoires include The Golden Monkey Defeats the Demon, The Monkey King Thrice Beats the Bony Ghost, Chanting under the Moon, Chang’e’s Flight to the Moon and Journey to the West – A New Version.  The group has crossed-over many genres, from Chinese traditional theatre to theatre education, community projects on traditional theatre, and drama culture.  The group has often gone on overseas tours and participated in international puppet festivals, as well as conducting cultural exchange and giving performances. The group has taken the puppet shows on tour to many countries and regions, including exhibitions on puppets and shadow plays.

Wong Fai

The director of the Hong Kong Puppet and Shadow Art Center, Wong Fai received puppetry training from the famous puppeteer Huang Yique and acquired the repertoires of Drunk Zhong Kui, The Monk, Small Rhesus Monkey, Puppets Riding Cycles and The Lion Dance. He also trained in shadow play and traditional puppetry under Tan Degui and Lee Yi-kuen, two leading virtuosi in the art form. He helped Lee Yi-kuen to establish the Hong Kong Shadow Play Troupe, the first ever to present shadow play performances in Hong Kong.  Wong has been the director and dramaturge for several puppet shows and shadow plays and has taken his puppet shows on tour to many countries and regions, including exhibitions on puppets and shadow plays.

Chan Chiu-yin       

Conductor

Chan Chiu-yin is a seasoned music administrator and has been engaged in instrumental music performance, teaching of music, training of orchestras and arts administration.  He is currently the Executive Director of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, an honorary committee member of the China Dizi Society, an honorary executive committee member of the Guangdong Dizi Society, President of the Hong Kong Chinese Instrumental Association, an executive member of the Hong Kong Bamboo Flute Society, Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra, and Conductor of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Student’s Union Chinese Orchestra.

Chan graduated from the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Hong Kong Institute of Education, with a Bachelor of Education degree with honours and a Certificate of Music Teaching.  He has also taken Arts Administration and Musicology courses at HKU SPACE, and the Modern Distance Music Education College of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Chan began learning wind instruments such as dizi, flute, houguan and suona, and Chinese music conducting while he was still in secondary school. Chan began learning dizi under Wong Ka-wai when he was young, and furthered his training in mainland China under dizi virtuosi Li Zhen, Zeng Yongqing, Yu Xunfa, Jiang Guoji and Da Ya in a bid to improve his technical knowhow of the arts of dizi.

Chan has been performed in many countries like the United States, Australia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Macau and mainland China.

Ling Cho-ho

Ling Cho-ho graduated from the Hong Kong Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in Music, with a concentration in General Studies. Ling first learned the dizi under Lee Yiu-cheung when he was in junior secondary school, and has been receiving training under Cheng Shing-tai since 2003. Ling has attained a number of prizes in the annual Hong Kong Schools Music Festival while he was in secondary school which includes First Runner-up in the New World Solo Prize Contest, Championship in Advanced class Dongxiao Solo Competition and Dizi Solo Competition. While studying music at the Baptist University, he went with the HKBU Choir and the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra on tour to Australia.

In 2009, Ling formed a musical ensemble Feng Consort with his fellow colleagues in HKBU and organized their first performance in December. Ling was the member of Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra, Wang Kwong Chinese Orchestra and HKBU Choir. He is currently participating actively in Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra and Feng Consort and also teaching in various primary and secondary schools.

Tse Kim-fei     

Director

Tse Kim-fei started learning erhu at the Music Office in 1987.  He entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1994, majoring in erhu under erhu virtuoso Wang Guotong and studied conducting techniques under Liang Ti and Henry Shek.  He was awarded an Advanced Diploma in 1998.  During his studies at the Academy, Tse was the Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra and the Academy Chinese Orchestra.  He travelled to performances in Southeast Asia and the United Kingdom with the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra and the Academy Chinese Music Ensemble.  He has performed at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong Youth Music Festival, Government House concerts, Hong Kong Film Awards, the opening ceremony of Tsing Ma Bridge, and in CD records and TV commercials.

Tse is active in the local Chinese Music scene, and concentrates on participation and promotion of Chinese music activities.  He is now the resident musician of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble and the Concertmaster and resident conductor of the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra.
