About the Performer

Pipa: Wong Chi-ching

Wong Chi-ching (Pipa)

Wong Chi-ching entered the China Broadcast Chinese Orchestra in 1976 and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) in 1987.  Currently, she is the Section Leader of Plucked-strings and Pipa Principal of the Orchestra.  She is also a keen supporter of contemporary music and has performed in international music festivals including the ISCM World Music Days and Musicarama, as well as premiering new works in various dance programmes.


Wong has performed as pipa soloist and with various renowned international orchestras on different occasions, among them the performance of When Mountains Roar with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields (1997); the mulit-media recital “Pipa Images” as part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival (2000); performance with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta at Saint-Riquier Festival in France (2001); performance of Tan Dun’s Pipa Concerto with Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra in the New Vision Festival (2002); performance of A Thousand Sweeps with Japan’s Kyushu Symphony Orchestra (2003); performances of Flowing Fancies with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (2003 & 2004); representing Hong Kong to participate in the China New Music Festival in Canada (2005); performance with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in “HKCO Virtuosi – Wong Chi-ching” (2007); Tour in the United Kingdom (2008); and Taipei Little Giant Formosa Series “Wong Chi-ching Solo Recital” (2010).  Other collaborating orchestras include the Philippines Symphony Orchestra, Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Municipal Chinese Orchestra, Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and the Central Folk Orchestra of China.


In 2009, Wong toured Italy with Wuji Ensemble, and recorded the CD The Impression of Wuji Ensemble with Hugo Records.  In 2011, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra presented Wong in the solo concert “Flowing Fancies”, featuring dialogues between the pipa and calligraphy.  The same year, Hugo Records released two solo albums by Ms. Wong – Pipa Wuqu and Pipa Wenqu.

Progremme Length

Running time of each performance is about 1 hour 15 minutes with no intermission.

Audiences are strongly advised to arrive punctually.  No latecomers will be admitted until the interval or a suitable break in the programme.
