Details of Performers

Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra

Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra is a highly organized orchestra aiming at promoting music among the general public especially the young generation in Hong Kong.  In order to achieve its goal, the Orchestra has performed frequently in the Hong Kong City Hall, regional town halls and civic centres a few hundred times for more than 30. A number of internationally famous conductors and soloists have been invited to perform with it. By using the idioms of popular music and organizing concert talks, the Orchestra has successfully introduced serious music and Chinese orchestral music to the public, and at the same time, brought about an awareness of the indigenous culture of the people.

Dr. Yip Wai-hong

Music Director

Dr. Yip Wai-hong is an eminent music educator. He served Hong Kong Baptist University as the Head of Music and Fine Arts Department for more than 30 years. He founded the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Children’s Choir, Yip’s Children’s Choir and Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra with the aim to nourish young talents in Hong Kong. The honours and accolades bestowed upon Dr. Yip include Honorary Citizenships of Fort Worth, Dallas and Tucson; The Golden Key of Avon Lake, Florida; Colonel of the State of Kentucky, the United States; and Hong Kong Art Education of the Year in 1990.  In 2003, he was awarded the Medal of Honour of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  In 2006, he was conferred the Award of Honorary University Fellow of Hong Kong Baptist University. Dr. Yip was made the Fellows of Wells Cathedral School, the United Kingdom in 2008. In 2011, Dr. Yip was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) for his valuable contribution to children music education, as well as his dedication in promoting the development of choral and orchestral music.

Jimmy Chiang

Principal Guest Conductor

Since winning the First Prize of the renowned “Lovro von Matacic” International Competition for Young Conductors in 2007, Jimmy Chiang’s conducting career has brought tremendous international attention, both on concert stages as well as in opera pits. His wide-ranging repertoire covers from Viennese Classic to living contemporaries. 2012 saw his convincing interpretation of the Spanish premiere of Elliott Carter’s Cello Concerto with the Orquesta Sinfonica Castilla y Leon in Valladolid.  Equally highly acclaimed by critics was his Mozart Gala with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Hansestadt Lübeck as “elegant and cultivated with his Vienna connections”.

Chiang was assistant music director of the Wagner’s “Ring” cycle at Theater Lübeck as well as numerous opera productions at the historic Eutin Opera Festival. In 2009 he was appointed Principal Conductor at Theater Freiburg in Germany. Moreover, he has appeared as guest conductor at the Komischen Oper Berlin, Theater Heidelberg and Scholsstheater Schönbrunn in Vienna. In addition, his many years of experience as an excellent vocal coach and collaborative pianist on international concert stages such as the Wiener Musikverein, has made him an excellent opera conductor who skillfully unite the stage and orchestra with sensitivity and leadership.  This has been proven, among others, in his successful production of Ligeti’s opera Le Grand Macabre with prominent stage director Calixto Bieito in 2010.

Born to a musical family in Hong Kong, and trained as a concert pianist since he was four, Chiang also studied cembalo, organ, cello and composition. He received his main musical training from the United Kingdom (FTCL), the United States (Bachelor of Music) and Vienna, Austria (Magister Artium), where he was a protégé of Seiji Ozawa (Vienna State Opera) and Leopold Hager (Vienna National Opera). Moreover, he inherited the tradition of Russian and German School of piano playing from renowned pianist Krassimira Jordan and Wolfgang Watzinger respectively.  All these together with his multicultural background (being fluent in English, German and Chinese) cultivated his versatile yet genuine musicality.

Vincent Wong

Narrator

Vincent Wong developed a keen interest in public speaking, from recitation to debates, and has a firm belief in critical and creative thinking. Upon graduation from university, he worked for a while at Ogilvy & Mather Advertising before joining the Hong Kong SAR Government as an Administrative Officer. He was in charge of reclamation projects and social welfare policies for the aged. He left the Government in 2000 to further his studies in the United Kingdom, where he was awarded an MBA degree from the Cambridge University and an LLB from the University of London. He was appointed Director of Strategic Planning by Commercial Radio (Hong Kong) in 2007, and manages its Radio 1.
