Programme Details

Born in Jiangsu, China, Zhao Ning first studied under Dan Zhaoyi then later at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under Gabriel Kwok, and graduated with a master’s degree there in 2011.  Awards she has won include first prize at the 6th J. N. Hummel International Piano Competition in Bratislava in 2008.  In her first formal recital appearance in Hong Kong, she will play one of Debussy's masterpieces, Images, Book I, which includes Reflets dans l'eau, Hommage à Rameau, a tribute to the great French composer of the 18th century, and the rapid Mouvement.  She will also include other pieces in contrast, with a sonata by Mozart's pupil Hummel, and a group of movements from the Preludes in All Major and Minor Keys by the English composer York Bowen, in whom there is now a revival of interest.  The programme also brings a Fantasy by Mendelssohn and examples of the work of the eccentric Russian composer Scriabin, including his Black Mass piano sonata.

Details of Performer

ZHAO Ning

Piano

Born in Changzhou, Jiangsu, Zhao Ning showed prodigious talent at an early age, winning first prize at the Beijing Xinghai National Young Musician Piano Competition.  She subsequently became a student of the studio of Dan Zhaoyi at the affiliated middle school of the Xinghai Conservatory of music.  In 2004, she was admitted to The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with full scholarship to study with the Head of Keyboard Gabriel Kwok.  Ning graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree with First-class Honour in 2009 and a Master‘s Degree in Music majoring in piano performance at the Academy as a scholarship recipient in June 2011.

Ning has received many prestigious awards, including first prize at the 6th J. N. Hummel International Piano Competition in Bratislava in 2008, and the Asian Cultural Council Lady Fung Memorial Fellowship in 2009 for studies at the Aspen Summer Music Festival in United States.  During her study in The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, she took part in masterclasses by renowned pianists and pedagogues, including Yefim Bronfman, Stephen Hough, Cristina Otiz, Christopher Elton, Vanessa Latarche, and Yoheved Kaplinsky.  She is active as a solo and collaborative pianist, and has performed in numerous cities of Mainland China, Europe and United States.  She has also performed as a soloist with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Rastislav Stur, Jean-Yves Ossonce, also with the Academy Orchestra under the baton of François-Xavier Roth, Alexander Shelley and Perry So.

Running time of this performance is about 1 hour and 30 minutes with an intermission of 15 minutes.

 

Audiences are strongly advised to arrive punctually.  No latecomers will be admitted until the interval or a suitable break in the programme.
