Programme Details

In the history of Western music, Schubert is best known for his lieder.  He only lived to his thirties, but his oeuvre includes more than six hundred art songs (lieder in German), which demonstrate his exceptional ability to create the most beautiful melodies. He was also able to elevate the piano part to be of equal importance with the vocal part, enabling the instrument to fully express the mood and the mode of the song to the full.  Francesca Chan, a famous local soprano who specializes in Lieder and also a much respected voice teacher, will, in a series of four lecture-recitals, analyze the lieder of Schubert, and give demonstration performances in conjunction with guest instrumentalists.  It will be an exceptional musical experience of Schubert's most moving songs.

5 July - The Early Years

12 July - The Mature Works

19 July - Schubert’s Swan Song

26 July - Love and Loss
