Details of Performers

Ng Hiu-hung

Zheng

Ng Hiu-hung, Connie is a renowned guzheng virtuoso. She trained under well-known teachers such as Rao Ningxin, Hon See-wah, Gao Zicheng and Louis Chen.  Her playing draws from the strengths of various schools, and her delicate performing style and comprehensive techniques come forth in deeply poignant performances.  She has taught in many tertiary institutions and at the Music Office.

 

She founded the Connie Ng Guzheng Music Centre and Ensemble and the Hong Kong Children’s Zheng Ensemble in 2001, of which she is also the Music Director.  She was the Artist-in-Residence on RTHK Radio 4 in 2003.  She was also the Artist-in-Residence of the Tai Po Civic Centre and Ko Shan Theatre in 2005 and 2006 respectively, for the programme ‘A Harmonic Ensemble of Dizi, Xiao, and Zheng’ organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.  She has also performed in the United States, Japan, Taiwan, mainland China, Portugal, Moscow, Singapore, Britain and Australia.

 

Ng’s discography includes two solo guzheng albums, The Butterfly Lovers (1996) and Meng Jiangnu (1998) under the BMG label, coming third on RTHK Radio 4’s classical records chart, making it one of the best sellers in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2001, ROI Productions Ltd issued another of her albums, Red Leaf, which combines Ng’s performance with computer MIDI effects.  One of the pieces, Autumn Scenery, was made into a music video by Suzhou Broadcasting System, which has since won several Class One Awards at cultural shows and competitions on television.

 

Chan Pik-sum

Gaohu & Erhu

Chan Pik-sum graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Bachelor’s degree with honours in Music Performance, double-majoring in gaohu and erhuunder Yu Qiwei, with a minor in Cantonese music.  She also trained in erhu under Wong On-yuen and Liu Yang.  She was a former concertmaster of the Academy Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra.  She has been on tours and performances in Belgium, Holland, Austria, Germany, France, Malaysia and Singapore as a representative from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and various music organizations. An active figure on the Hong Kong music scene, Chan is currently a member of the YWCA Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra and WindPipe Chinese Ensemble. Apart from concert activities, she has, on several occasions, been invited by RTHK Radio Four to make recordings for the programme, Music of Friends, as a soloist or an ensemble member.  Chan is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

 

Hung Wai-ting Vicky

Vicky Hung Wai-ting received her first training in guzheng under Connie Ng and Wong Ching-yee before she entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2006 where she was a student of Xu Lingzi.  She was awarded the Spring-Time Stage Productions Scholarship in 2011, and graduated the same year with a Bachelor of Music (Hons) degree. She is currently the concertmaster of the Connie Ng Guzheng Ensemble.

 

Ho Ying-ying

Ho Ying-ying received her first training in guzheng under Connie Ng before she entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where she was a student of Xu Lingzi.  She has won many prizes in music competitions, including a Silver Award – Concerto Section and a Bronze Award – Specialism Section at the First International Guzheng Stars Competition, first runner-up in Guzheng - Senior Class as well as Advanced Class at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, a Gold Award – Grade 10 at the International Music and Arts Competition, and another Gold Award at the All China Charity Concert.

 

Ng Lai-ping

Zheng

Ng Lai-ping received her first training in guzheng under Lee Chi-hung before she entered the China Conservatory where she was a student of Yang Ling. Her guzheng teachers also included Melody Kwong, Connie Ng and Wu Li. A winner of multiple awards, Ng garnered the highest honour, the ‘Gold Bauhinia Award’, at the 8th and 9th Hong Kong International Youth Competition for Music and Dance, as well as a Gold Award for Guzheng Specialism – Non-professional Class, China Tournament, of the 2009 International Music and Dance Competition of Singapore.

Programme Length

Running time of each performance is about 1 hour 30 minutes with an intermission of 15 minutes. 

Audiences are strongly advised to arrive punctually.  No latecomers will be admitted until the interval or a suitable break in the programme.
