Si Zhu Kong (Taiwan)

Sizhukong was founded in 2005 by a group of innovative Jazz and Chinese music virtuosi in Taiwan.  While the members might have come from different backgrounds, they share in the same passion and belief.  The ensemble is led by Peng Yuwen, a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston where she studied theories of composition in Jazz and Jazz piano.  Peng is dedicated to fusing Chinese music with Jazz and world music.  The group has been invited to appear in major music events, such as the Taipei Arts Festival, the Taichung Jazz Festival, the Jarasun International Jazz Festival of Korea etc..  When traditional Chinese music and modern Jazz clash head on, a unique timbre is created.  This, together with the high voltage of the players, often wins the warmest applause from their audience.  Their 2007 album release, Sizhukong, has also won the critical acclaim of music-makers and music critics in Taiwan and overseas.

We never knew that Chinese music can be played with a swing, or Jazz can sound so quaint, until we heard Sizhukong.
