Interview: New Force in Motion Series: Circle II by Chen Kai

As a young dancer, Chen Kai learnt from such a myriad of choreographers as Jin Xing (China), Jutta Hell and Dieter Baumann (Germany), Tom Brown (USA), Pewan Chow (Hong Kong), Zhao Min-hua (China), John Utans (Australia), Wen Hui (China), Jutta Czurda (Germany), Sheela Raj (India), and Merce Cunningham (USA).

Chen is a founder and artistic director of Classifiable Movement Company.  The dancing knowledge of this young and dynamic artist is made up of different genres of contemporary dance.  He settled in Hong Kong with ‘Quality Migrant Admission Scheme’.  His belief ‘Let the movement speak for itself’ is carried out by his innovative choreography method ‘Classifiable Movement’.  The logic of movement's function and meaning begins to emerge on stages worldwide.

During his research in USA, he staged Two Poems – Line and Circle (2009) at the Asia Society in New York City.  Then he created Sweep (2009) in Hong Kong.  In Korea, he joined the Korea Choreography Festival with Line (2010).  Back in Hong Kong, he invited local visual artist Oscar Ho for collaboration in Aureola & Line (2012) the work was presented in Liu Hai Su Art Museum.  The first creation for Classifiable Movement Company and the result of Chen's research project in USA was Flex (2013), premiered in Hong Kong.

‘Classifiable Movement’ choreography method has been touching five characters: ‘Linear Movement’, ‘Rolling Movement’, ‘Turning Movement’, ‘Twist Movement’, and ‘Flex Movement’.  In the past five years, a total of seven creations were presented with well response, they included Line, Line and Aureola, Line II, Sweep, Twist, Flex, and Circle. Circle II is Chen Kai's eighth work.

In this new work, Chen and his dancers spin their bodies, they are daring, innovative, extreme and enthrallingly beautiful.
