Frida

Feet, what do I want them for if I have wings to fly?

Inspired by the life and works of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, Helen Lai creates a series of tableaux-dansants based on the paintings My Birth, The Wounded Table, The Two Fridas, Memory and What the Water Gave Me.

Frida was premiered in Hong Kong in 1996 by the City Contemporary Dance Company and was re-staged in Taipei by The Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan in the same year.

Choreographer: Helen Lai

Helen Lai is a preeminent choreographer from Hong Kong, and former Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of the City Contemporary Dance Company. Some of her most notable works include Nine Songs, The Rite of Spring, In the Beginning, Plaza X, Her Story and Testimony. A many-times award winner, Lai has won both critical and popular acclaim for her choreography.

Dancers: Wen Hui, Mandy Yim, Victor Ma, Louis Huang and Kenneth Sze

Suddenly

Things that happen suddenly are in fact not so sudden...

Suddenly is about incidents. There is no logic, only happenings that weave in and out.  Harmonious relationships can suddenly turn sour; the mild and the gentle turn rough and brutal; what is beautiful becomes ugly; and what is calm and peaceful is suddenly maniacal…… In life, things make sudden twists and turns and catch us at unawares, but if we look closely, we can find actually there is always a reason, a cause, behind it all……

Choreographer: Victor Ma

Victor Choi-wo Ma was trained in Dance and Drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, graduating in 1988 and 1993 respectively. He co-founded the dance company, Y-Space, with Mandy Ming-yin Yim in 1995, and is currently its Artistic Director. Ma has been the choreographer and movement designer of several arts companies in Hong Kong and on the international front. Some of his notable works include None of Your Business, Not a Double Room, Unconscious I & II, Dance “in” Possible!? I – IV, Body, I.D. & Space I – VI, and curated and co-ordinated the i-Dance Festival since 2009.
