FARRUCA

 

World Premiere on 4 August 1984 by Ballet Nacional de España (Spain) at the International Classical Theatre Festival of Mérida

Bailaor and choreographer Juan Quintero, unforgettable in his role as Creonte in Medea, is the author of this piece for three bailaores (flamenco dancers).  Over the years it has been performed by several of the leading dancers of the Company.  Sombre and elegant in trunk and arm movements, the piece saves its most exquisite flourishes for the footwork in the zapateado.  It is a perfect example of how flamenco choreographed for an ensemble must be performed, with respect for the group dance yet at the same time allowing each bailaor to express his or her unique personality.

BOLÉRO

 

World Premiere on 7 September 1988 by Ballet Nacional de España (Spain) at Teatro del Liceu de Barcelona

 

Maurice Ravel´s haunting melody into visual form has provided a challenge for more than one choreographers.  Boléro is in fact the result of a commission from ballerina Ida Rubinstein.  The first performance took place in the Paris Opera on 22 November 1928.  For the occasion Bronislava Nijinska created a ballet in which Ida Rubinstein, surrounded by two dozen enraptured men, interpreted a solo on the table of a Spainish tavern.  Many choreographies have been created for Boléro but especially important are those created by Serge Lifar, Pilar López, La Argentinita, Dolin, Dore Hoyer, Maurice Béjart, Nacho Duato and now José Granero´s which was first performed in homage to Ravel in the Grand Theatre of Bordeaux on 9 October 1987.

MEDEA

 

World Premiere on 13 July 1984 by Ballet Nacional de España (Spain) at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid

 

This is one of Spanish ballet’s masterpieces of the recent decades.  Few choreographies have managed to display such high quality dance in the precise portrayal of Seneca's myth of Medea.  José Granero, Manolo Sanlúcar and Miguel Narros created this great ballet premiered by Manuela Vargas and Antonio Alonso, in the roles of Medea and Jason, accompanied by Maribel Gallardo, Juan Quintero and Victoria Eugenia.

 

These are classic characters in the recent history of Spanish dance have been interpreted in subsequent years by the most eminent dancers from the company.  Sanlúcar's notes enrich Granero’s choreographic genius: Medea's long arms twist and twine as she prepares her spell and recreates her destructive passion for Jason.  This great Spanish ballet conveys one of those timeless stories of universal theatre which via flamenco's deep expression of feeling reveals itself to be even more startling.

Ballet Nacional de España (Spain)
 

Today, the Ballet Nacional de España (BNE) is facing a new creative period, under the direction of Antonio Najarro.  Founded in 1978 under the name of Ballet Nacional Español and with Antonio Gades as its first Artistic Director, the BNE is, under the National Institute of Stage Arts and Music, one of the best known in the world, an ambassador of the Spanish culture.

 

The BNE has been internationally acclaimed by audience and critics, obtaining numerous awards, such as the Critics’ Prize for Best Foreign Show during the 1988 season at the New York Metropolitan, the Japanese Critics’ Prize in 1991, the Critics’ Prize for Best Spectacle at the Bellas Artes Theatre in Mexico City in 1994, a prize awarded by the Spanish newspaper, El País for “Poeta” in 1999, and the Critics’ Prize as well as the Prize awarded by the audience at the VI Festival de Jerez de la Frontera (Spain) in 2002, for the choreography of Fuenteovejuna by Antonio Gades.

 

In 2008, 2010 and 2012, the BNE obtained Teatro de Rojas (Toledo) Awards for Best Dancing Performance, given by the audience, and in August 2010, the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas La Unión gave the Ballet Nacional de España the Stage Arts Extraordinary Prize, for its magnificent contribution to the preservation and diffusion of the best flamenco.

 

 

Antonio Najarro

Director of the Ballet Nacional de España (Spain)

 

Born in Madrid in 1975, Antonio Najarro is an accomplished dancer and choreographer, who studied under the most prestigious Spanish dance masters in various styles of dance including classical ballet, Bolera School, Spanish classical, folk, flamenco and contemporary dance.  He graduated with honours in Spanish dance from the Mariemma Royal Conservatory of Professional Dance in Madrid and performed leading roles, dancing diverse choreographies by maestros including Rafael Aguilar, Antonio Gades, Alberto Lorca, Mariemma, José Antonio Ruiz and José Granero, among others.

 

Najarro began his career at the age of fifteen, performing in prominent Spanish dance companies including Ballet Antología, Ballet del Teatro Lírico de la Zarzuela, the Antonio Márquez Company, José Antonio and the Spanish Ballets and Aida Gomez's Company.  In 1996, he was a special guest soloist in the play La Gitana, choreographed by José Antonio Ruiz and Paul Chalmer, with the Ballet del Arena di Verona under the direction of Carla Fracci. He was accepted into the Ballet Nacional de España in 1997, under the direction of Aurora Pons, Nana Lorca and Victoria Eugenia and three years later, he ascended to the rank of Principal Dancer under the direction of Aida Gomez.

 

Najarro's exceptional artistic talent led him to choreography as a young dancer.  He competed in several editions of the Choreographic Contest of Spanish Dance and Flamenco in Madrid with Suspiro del Moro (1995), Movimientos Reversos (1996) and Nereidas (1999) where he earned a name for himself winning the first prize in the competition.

 

In 2002, Najarro formed his own company, Compañía Antonio Najarro, where he created, choreographed and starred in four productions: Tango Flamenco (2002), Flamencoriental (2006), Jazzing Flamenco (2008) and Suite Sevilla (2011).  His choreographic talents grabbed the attention of the figure skating world as he was sought after by Olympic and World Champions to create their competitive programmes.  He created Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat's 2002 Olympic programme Flamenco which led them to earn the Olympic Gold Medal.  He has also created programmes Poeta and Otoño Porteño for World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist, Stephane Lambiel, World Champion, Brian Joubert, European Champions, Nathalie Péchalat and Fabian Bourzat and U.S. National Champion, Jeremy Abbott.  Najarro performed as a special guest in Art on Ice in Switzerland, Champions on Ice and Fantasy on Ice in Japan as well as served as the figure skating tours' choreographer.

 

Najarro's accolades include the Best Choreographer Award at the International Contest of Spanish Dance and Flamenco in Seville in 2008, the Harlequin Prize for the Best Young Choreographer in 2009, the 2010 MAX Award for the Performing Arts for the Best Male Dance Performer and the Award APDE 2012 of Spanish, Flamenco and Classical Dance Teachers.

 

Najarro was appointed Director of the Ballet Nacional de España on 11 April 2011 and assumed his position on 1 September 2011.
