Bamboo Dream
"Such beauty and perfection … is hardly offered in the current dance world."
- Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

Bamboo, along with the pine and plum tree who stand proudly in snowy winter, is considered by Chinese as a symbol of elegance and integrity. The bamboo grove is also celebrated as a meeting space, where many legendary gatherings have taken place among renowned scholars, and where scholars have wine and compose poems. The bamboo grove also provides an ideal setting for fairytales and love stories. In Bamboo Dream, world-renowned choreographer Lin Hwai-min takes off from this beloved metaphor of Chinese culture to create a dance fantasy on a stage forested with bamboo trees.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan
"The Best of the Best" - The Sydney Morning Herald

According to legend, Cloud Gate is the name of the oldest known dance in China , a ritual dance of some 5,000 years ago. In 1973, choreographer Lin Hwai-min adopted this classical name for the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community: Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. Its rich repertoire has its roots in Asian myths, folklore and aesthetics but it brings to these age-old beliefs and stories a contemporary and universal perspective.

Cloud Gate has made dozens of overseas tours throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and America, including engagements at the Next Wave Festival at BAM, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Arts Festival, Biennale de la danse de Lyon, Adelaide Festival, Berlin Festival, the festival celebrating the 25th anniversary of Pina Bausch's Tanztheater Wuppertal, Sadler's Wells Theatre and Barbican Centre in London, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Kennedy Center. Cloud Gate has been acclaimed as "Asia's leading contemporary dance theatre" (The Times) and "One of the finest dance companies in the world" (The Globe and Mail) . At home, Cloud Gate performs extensively throughout Taiwan .
