The Marriage of the Top Scholar

Yu Fengsheng, a scholar, adores a courtesan called Hua Yanhong. One day, he puts on his best clothes and pays her a visit, and she falls in love with him. He promises to marry her after he has passed the imperial examination. Later they say goodbye at a riverside. He gives her a round fan made of gold as a keepsake, and the two vow to spend the rest of their lives together.

Fengsheng’s parents died when he was young, and he was brought up by his father's concubine, Sijie. Now that he has come out first in the highest imperial examination, he requests the emperor to honour Sijie as a titled lady as befits a devoted son and a loyal subject. After he returns home in glory, he is harshly scolded by his mother and his sister Mingyue, who have heard about his relationship with a courtesan. Sijie has Mingyue forge a letter and return the keepsake to break off the engagement. Yanhong is so grieved by the thought that Fengsheng has betrayed her that she decides to become a nun.

Seeing how lovesick Fengsheng is, Sijie and Mingyue go to a nunnery to pray for him. There they catch sight of a poem written on the wall. Admiring the poet for her talent, Sijie decides to marry Fengsheng to her and asks the emperor for permission. Fengsheng is overjoyed to find that the poet is none other than Yanhong. The lovers are married.

One day, Danfeng encounters Jin when hunting eagles and they fall in love with each other. They exchange two arrows, one made of gold and the other silver, as tokens of engagement. Unfortunately, the empress dowager wants her nephew to marry Danfeng while the minister wants his daughter to marry a prince from the state of Shu. Danfeng sends a message to Jin arranging a rendezvous during the third watch, but Cailuan intercepts the message, changing the meeting time to the second watch. Jin departs in haste, leaving the silver arrow behind him, while Cailuan gets drunk and spends the night with the nephew of the empress dowager.

Having ascended to the throne, Danfeng wants to make Jin her husband. The three princes quarrel endlessly, each wanting to marry the empress. Presenting the silver arrow, Cailuan arrives before the three and claims that Jin has slept with her. Infuriated by the confusion, all parties concerned return to their own country and start a war. Defeated and wounded, Danfeng returns to her palace with the intention of committing suicide after she confronts Jin about his betrayal.
